Louis van Gaal arrived at a highly disgruntled Manchester United squad. Knowing that they were the 7th place finishers of the Barclays Premier League, he wanted to bring the English giants back to the top of English football in 2014-15. However, he needed a higher dribble with his lineup.
Centre backs Rio Ferdinand and captain Nemanja Vidic served their final year of contract for the Red Devils in 2013-14. They were immediately snapped by Queen's Park Rangers FC and Internazionale Milano FC for an undisclosed transfer fee. On the left side of defense, Patrice Evra was snatched away by Juventus FC in their need of a new left winger. These were 3 of the most experienced defenders that Manchester United had, but due to team issues, they were transferred away. Also, Shinji Kagawa returned to his former club, Borussia Dortmund to enjoy another terrible season in Germany.
To start the 2014-15 Premier League season, Manchester United had acquired several new players for example, Victor Valdes, Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Tyler Blackett, James Wilson and Jesse Lingaard. This was not a top team of extremely famous players, it was just a young inexperienced football club.
After failing to win the first 3 Premier League games, Louis van Gaal decided to make a few transfers on the market. Manchester United had spent little money in the summer acquiring youngsters and were keeping an eye on Real Madrid star midfielders Angel Di Maria and Sami Khedira. Van Gaal made a successful transfer of Di Maria, providing Carlo Ancelotti with 94 million Euros.
Defense was also an issue for Manchester United. Their centre-backs, Chris Smalling, Johnny Evans and Phil Jones spent most of the 2013-14 season watching veterans Vidic and Ferdinand struggle to keep the momentum alive for Manchester United. Marcos Rojo played a solid defense on the left wing back over the summer for Argentina and helped Sporting Lisbon CP gain a second place finish in La Portuguese Liga. Manchester United spent another 30 million to sign the Argentine centre-back.
Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney were not forming a great partnership on the strikeforce, with van Persie missing far too many set ups by Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney. Monaco agreed to transfer Radamel Falcao to the loan market for Manchester United. Now, Falcao is playing on a strikeforce with Robin van Persie as Rooney is doing an excellent job playing at centre midfield.
Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher were injured to start out the year for Manchester United as well. Louis van Gaal covered his money and brought a strong central midfielder from Ajax AFC and another surprise for the Netherlands at the FIFA World Cup, Daley Blind. One of the best crossers with both right and left foot, Blind was the guy that van Gaal needed to set up headers for Robin van Persie and Maraoune Fellani.
Sitting in 4th place in the Barclays Premier League this season is better than where Manchester United were last season. Still, it is their goal to get the season title. Falcao needs to start scoring goals as he has only scored a single tally against Everton, but the expectations of Ashley Young, Wayne Rooney, Angel Di Maria, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie have been met as we are halfway through the Barclays Premier League season. Marcos Rojo is playing solidly on defense and David de Gea is becoming a World-Class goalkeeper also.
For the Winter Transfer Window, Manchester United is interested in Dortmund defender Mats Hummels to improve defensively, Marco Reus to replace Young on the left wing and Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba to replace Wayne Rooney on defense. There are possibilities for Robin van Persie and David de Gea's departure to Real Madrid, and Manchester United are expecting Gareth Bale in return for the transfer. If Manchester United can improve their squad in the following manner, they will be back to win the 2014-15 Premier League once Chelsea and Manchester City start to slide.
